Property Managers are faced with significant challenges in their day-to-day work; the very nature of the job is to address problems and create solutions. Whether it be emergency situations, dealing with difficult residents or Board members, managing vendors, or just staying on top of a workload that is constantly evolving, high stress levels and burn-out are significant health risks to property managers. What does that mean for residents and Condo Boards? Burnt out PM’s are not engaged, do not think pro-actively and are more likely to make errors.
Onyx recognizes this and has taken measures to help prevent burnout, such as working with a third party provider to handle after-hours emergency calls, so our property managers are not on-call 24-7.
We are excited to announce our newest initiative: Onyx has implemented an employee wellness program and strategy to assist our team members with all aspects of their health & well-being. Each month will focus on a different theme, such as Nutrition, Physical Fitness or Safety, with mix of educational activities and fun challenges designed to inspire the Onyx team to embrace healthier lifestyles and make better choices.
A major focus of our wellness strategy is supporting mental health. Recently our Executive Assistant Jenn attended a Mental Health in the Workplace workshop and learned the stats on why prioritizing mental health at work is so crucial. 1-in-5 Canadians experience mental health concerns and 30% of disability claims are related to mental health concerns, yet 70% of businesses in Canada do not have a mental health strategy in place. By prioritizing wellness, and specifically mental wellness, Onyx can cultivate a positive, adaptable workforce that is happy and excited to meet the challenges of the property manager role.
To kick off our initiative, and since August is National Wellness Month, the Onyx Team is participating in a Wellness Challenge! We have compiled a list of 12 daily health habits on a tracking sheet and are encouraging each person to aim for at least 8 checkmarks per day. These health habits go beyond drinking more water and eating more veggies (although those are on the list!). We also included getting at least 20 minutes of sunshine and spending 5 minutes writing in a gratitude journal. We also created a calendar where bonus points can be earned for activities like calling a loved one to catch-up or getting to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual. The top 3 point-earners will win a prize, but everyone will benefit from taking an active approach to adapting healthier habits. If you would like a copy of our Wellness Challenge Tracking sheet or August’s Wellness Calendar, please email jenn@onyxcm.ca we are happy to share.
